In the afterword of the first edition of &#8220;Dororo&#8221; in book form, Tezuka wrote that the idea for the name came from hearing a friend&#8217;s child mispronounce it as <em>doror\u014d<\/em>. Tezuka recounted this differently in a later edition, where he attributed the bungled speech to\u00a0&#8220;my child&#8221;. In any case, we have the undeveloped articulation skills of a young child to thank for this memorable name.<\/p>\n<h3>Distinguishing Features<\/h3>\n<p>Primarily identifiable by his &#8220;one-eye&#8221; hair swoop with the spikey cut-back, he is a plucky survivor with a will of iron.<\/p>\n<h3>Status: Primary Star (\u2605\u2605\u2605)<\/h3>\n<p>The child star of his own samurai-era drama,\u00a0Dororo is best known for his titular role as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=1094\">Hyakkimaru<\/a>&#8216;s side-kick\u00a0during his long quest to retrieve\u00a0his 48 missing body parts from the demons which possess them, in <a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=619\"><em>Dororo<\/em> (1967-69)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It is interesting to note that Dororo comes from a tragic family. Dororo&#8217;s father, the bandit leader <a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=1151\">Hibukuro<\/a> was betrayed and deposed by his subordinate <a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=1079\">Itachi<\/a>\u00a0and both parents die amidst the famine-torn environment of the series &#8211;
