is…

Coming Soon.

Distinguishing Features

Dr. Hanamaru is instantly recognizable by his round bulbous nose and his huge, overflowing poofy white beard.

Status: Major Star (★★★★)

Probably Osamu Tezuka’s most reliable “go-to” Star to play a scientist or a doctor. He is generally a friendly and competent researcher, concerned with the welfare of mankind. He will often be the one to make a great discovery pertinent to a crisis, even to the salvation of mankind, and yet be disregarded as a crackpot by the rest of the scientific community. However, at other times he serves as a voice of sage wisdom – including somewhat famously lecturing Black Jack on the significance of not underestimating the human body and the miracles of nature.

Notable Roles

While he never has his own series, Dr. Hanamaru is a significant contributor to almost all of Tezuka’s major science fiction series, and one of his most recognizable and reliable faces. First appearing in Tobi’s 20 (1948) as “Old Man Ya”, his breakout role is most likely as “Dr. Bell” in <a scientists in Astro Boy (1952-68), and no less than eleven separate doctors (and one Buddhist priest) in<a
