snowstorm in Imperial Russia the superstitious townspeople are panicked by the bad omen. \u00a0Afraid that the girl will grow up to become a witch, they demand the parents cast the baby into the river. \u00a0However at the last minute, the quick thinking of &#8220;Ivan the Idiot&#8221; as she&#8217;s known to the townspeople is treated as a witch &#8211; disowned and blamed for the family&#8217;s hardship even by her own father. \u00a0Only Minya&#8217;s ailing mother shows her any love, but when she dies, Minya is left effectively homeless and penniless. \u00a0However, once again it&#8217;s Ivan to the rescue as he convinces Minya to run away together.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, soon the romantic notions of a carefree life are shattered, as the pair are chased by hungry wolves and then locked out of a local inn and left to freeze to death. \u00a0As unluck would have it though, the inn is beset by the feared bandit, Homebrewsky and it is only Minya&#8217;s angelic singing that saves the inn&#8217;s patrons from the bandit&#8217;s wrath. \u00a0Minya&#8217;s voice also catches the attention of an aristocrat named Nikolai Ramentov Udonsky and he insists that Minya (and Ivan) join him as his houseguests.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10909\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10909\" class=\"wp-image-10909 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/redsnow-02-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/redsnow-02-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/redsnow-02-60x90.jpg 60w, https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/redsnow-02.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-10909\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Singing before the emissary of the Tsar<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Before long, Udonsky presents Minya to the famed Russian composer, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pyotr_Ilyich_Tchaikovsky\">Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky<\/a> and although he&#8217;s incredulous at first, after hearing her voice he immediately is inspired to write music for her. \u00a0As Minya&#8217;s fame grows, so does Udonsky&#8217;s desire and he soon begins pressuring her into marriage. \u00a0When she receives a love letter from a secret admirer, Udonsky sets out to confront his rival, only to discover himself face-to-face with the fearsome Homebrewsky.<\/p>\n<p>The bandit makes quick work of Udonsky and kidnaps Minya for his own. However, Ivan comes to Minya&#8217;s rescue for a third time and Homebrewsky is defeated. \u00a0In the aftermath, Ivan is revealed as a secret prince of the Romanov family who was sent to the church in hiding. \u00a0The pair are married as red snows once again falls &#8211; this time as a good omen sent from her mother in heaven.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10910\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10910\" class=\"wp-image-10910 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/redsnow-03-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/redsnow-03-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/redsnow-03-60x90.jpg 60w, https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/redsnow-03.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-10910\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A showdown in the snow<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>What you should know<\/h2>\n<p><em>Red Snow<\/em> (1955) first appeared as a serial in the <em>shojo<\/em> monthly <em>Girl Friend<\/em> &#8211; a magazine that began in 1908 and ran until 1955, making Tezuka&#8217;s feature one of its last to be published. \u00a0It was a perfect home for the story to appear as the magazine catered to a then &#8220;modern&#8221; readership and liberally promoted both Takarazuka and foreign movie stars.<\/p>\n<p>Although it is much less well-known than some of Tezuka&#8217;s other <em>shojo<\/em> manga from the same period, notably <a title=\"Princess Knight [Sh\u014djo Club] (Manga)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=754\"><em>Princess Knight<\/em> [Shojo Club] (1953-56)<\/a>, it greatly inspired female manga artist <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Miyako_Maki\">Miyako Maki<\/a> (half of Japan&#8217;s &#8220;manga power couple&#8221; with her husband, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leiji_Matsumoto\">Leiji Matsumoto<\/a>). \u00a0After reading\u00a0<em>Red Snow<\/em> (1955) she reportedly spent seven months crafting <em>Hahakoi Waltz<\/em> (<span lang=\"ja\">\u6bcd\u604b\u3044\u30ef\u30eb\u30c4)<\/span>, which was published as a book in 1957, and marks her professional debut.<\/p>\n<p><em>Red Snow<\/em> (1955) is reportedly, according to literary critic Koichi Kato, heavily influenced by the Soviet animation &#8216;The Snow Queen&#8217; &#8211; although it&#8217;s unclear how that&#8217;s possible because <em>Red Snow<\/em> (1955) came out in 1955 and The Snow Queen seems to have been released in 1957.
