Astro Boy<\/em> (1952-68)<\/a>, Chapter 009 \u2018The Coral Reef Adventure\u2019 (\u30a2\u30c8\u30e0\u5927\u4f7f), first appeared in the August 1954 expanded summer edition of Shonen<\/em>.<\/p>\n

What it\u2019s about?<\/h3>\n

Professor Ochanomizu reluctantly agrees to modify Astro for a period of two days so that he can find out what it’s like to experience fear like humans do. As soon as Astro is modified a creepy looking man shows up at Astro’s house requesting his services. He is a former sea captain and his ship crossed paths with what he calls a ghost ship. The ghost ship had been near the test grounds for a hydrogen bomb and radiation killed all the crew and made all his own crew sick and disfigured his features. He asks Astro to locate and take care of the ship and its contamination. Even though Astro is nervous his dad urges him to accept the job. Astro finds the ship and deposits it on a nearby coral reef in spite of being terrified by the thought of ghosts. He thinks there actually are ghosts but they turn out to be poor animals disfigured by the hydrogen bomb’s radiation. Afterwards Astro admits to Ochanomizu that he never wants to be hindered by scared feelings ever again.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

At his request, Dr. Ochanomizu reluctantly agrees to temporarily modify Astro Boy so he can feel fear as a human being. Of course, as soon as Astro is modified, he receives a request from a former sea captain to investigate the appearance of a phantom ship. The ship, which had been near a hydrogen bomb testing site, had crossed paths with his ship and its radiation had either killed, or made his crew very sick. He asks Astro to stop the spread of contamination. Although he’s suddenly extremely nervous, Astro’s dad encourages him to help and Astro soon finds the ship and sets it down on a nearby coral reef. Terrified of the “ghosts” he encounters, he eventually realizes they are simply animals disfigured by radiation.
