Surrounded by blushing devotees, Mikura is so popular that both his publisher (seeking to lock up his future publications) and a major politician (seeking to capitalize on his fame) attempt to marry off their daughters to him.\u00a0 However, behind the bright lights of his fame and fortune, Mikura desperately struggles to hide a dark secret &#8211; the fact that he suffers from crippling sexual perversions which are driving him towards madness.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_549\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/barbara-manga01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-549\" class=\" wp-image-549 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/barbara-manga01-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Barbara at Shinjuku Station\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/barbara-manga01-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/barbara-manga01.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-549\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Barbara at Shinjuku Station<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As the story opens Mikura, while passing through Shinjuku Station, encountes a perpetually-drunken but strikingly erudite hippy named Barbara.\u00a0 He takes her in, and the two quickly develop a friendship, with Mikura caring for Barbara in her drunken stupor, and she caring for him when his hallucinations drive him into to sexual encounters with animals and inanimate objects which he imagines to be women.\u00a0 As their friendship deepens and takes on a more romantic edge, Mikura begins to suspect that there is more to this hippy than meets the eye.\u00a0 As he uncovers more about her past, evidence seems to suggest that she may not, in fact, even be human.\u00a0 When Mikura happens to drop by a bar in Shinjuku and meets Barbara&#8217;s mother, Munemoshune &#8211; a name strikingly similar to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mnemosyne\">Mnemosyne<\/a>, the Greek goddess who slept with Zeus and gave birth to the nine Muses &#8211; he comes to believe she is a muse of the arts that has been residing with artist after artist over the centuries.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_550\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/barbara-manga02.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-550\" class=\" wp-image-550 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/barbara-manga02-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Mikura's Madness\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/barbara-manga02-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/barbara-manga02.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-550\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mikura&#8217;s Madness<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As Mikura becomes ever more obsessed with Barbara, he descends into a life of sadomasochistic clubs, black masses, mother goddess cults, voodoo murderers and more.\u00a0 As his own madness worsens, it becomes almost impossible to tell the difference between the fantastic elements surrounding Barbara and those in his own mind.<\/p>\n<h2>What you should know<\/h2>\n<p>As with many of Tezuka&#8217;s works, <em>Barbara<\/em> was inspired by a literary source &#8211; in this case <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Tales_of_Hoffmann\"><em>Les contes d&#8217;Hoffmann<\/em><\/a> (<em>The Tales of Hoffmann<\/em>), an op\u00e9ra by Jacques Offenbach.\u00a0 In the opera, Hoffmann is also approached by a muse who tries get him to forsake all other loves and devote himself fully to her.\u00a0 For Tezuka, the famous third act, where Hoffman loses his reflection to the courtesan Giulietta, clearly illustrates the dilemma all artists must one day face &#8211; accept compromise for the sake of fame, or to resign oneself to solitude in defense of one&#8217;s principles.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_551\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/barbara-manga03.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-551\" class=\" wp-image-551 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/barbara-manga03-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Barbara's mother, Munemoshune\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/barbara-manga03-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/barbara-manga03.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-551\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Barbara&#8217;s mother, Munemoshune<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>Barbara<\/em> (1973-74) stands out very distinctly from the themes usually associated with Tezuka&#8217;s work.\u00a0 Although, given the fact that Barbara seems to change her appearance at will, there is an element of Tezuka&#8217;s often explored theme of transformation, it is not the primary theme.\u00a0 Instead, in the afterword of the <a title=\"Osamu Tezuka Complete Manga Works\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=443\"><em>Osamu Tezuka Complete Manga Works<\/em><\/a> edition (<a title=\"MT-101 to MT-150\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=456\/#mt-146\">MT-146<\/a>), Tezuka himself suggests that, &#8220;perhaps Barbara can be seen as an allegory of art&#8221; (1982, p. 232), and he adjusted his artwork style to introduce more fluid and twisted elements to support this theme.\u00a0 However, Tezuka also notes that when it was first being serialized in <a title=\"Big Comic \u30d3\u30c3\u30b0\u30b3\u30df\u30c3\u30af [Biggu Komikku]\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=476\"><em>Big Comic<\/em><\/a>, some found <em>Barbara<\/em> (1973-74) to be a little too subjective, presenting a world too particular to be well understood.\u00a0 In response to this, Tezuka began to introduce elements of the occult into the story &#8211;
