an unlicensed and shadowy doctor with inhuman surgical skill.<\/p>\n<p>For the most part shunned by the medical community (despite their grudging respect for his unrivaled skill as a surgeon), <a title=\"Black Jack (Star)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=1043\">Black Jack<\/a> operates on the fringes of society.\u00a0 As such, he is a popular choice for gangsters and other ne&#8217;er-do-wells with nowhere else to turn.\u00a0 Though he and his pint-sized assistant <a title=\"Pinoko (Star)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=1240\">Pinoko<\/a> try to live a quiet life in his small clinic out in in the deserted country-side, there is a steady stream of patients that other doctors have given up on beating a path to his door.\u00a0 He is their very last hope.<\/p>\n<p>Although he is almost always able to save his patients, bringing many of them back from the very edge of death, his fees can be astronomical.\u00a0 Yet, his distinctive appearance, with a large scar across his face and a streak of white running through his jet black hair, and his carefully cultivated image of being heartless and corrupt, conceal a heart of gold.\u00a0 As kind of a &#8220;medical robin hood&#8221;,\u00a0<a title=\"Black Jack (Star)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=1043\">Black Jack<\/a> often wields his scalpel in the name of honor and justice, righting wrongs that no one else can.<\/p>\n<p>Brain transplants, fingerprint transplants, operating blind, and removing a parasitic worm from his own intestines while under assault by a pack of wild dingos are but a handful of <a title=\"Black Jack (Star)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=1043\">Black Jack<\/a>&#8216;s many astonishing medical accomplishments.<\/p>\n<h2>What you should know<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_555\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/blackjack-manga01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-555\" class=\" wp-image-555 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/blackjack-manga01-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Black Jack and Geta\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/blackjack-manga01-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/blackjack-manga01.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-555\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Black Jack and Geta<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In 1973, Akita Shoten, the publisher of the popular <a title=\"Weekly Shonen Champion \u9031\u520a\u5c11\u5e74\u30c1\u30e3\u30f3\u30d4\u30aa\u30f3 [Shuukan Sh\u014dnen Champion]\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=479\"><em>Weekly Shonen Champion<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em>decided to commission Tezuka for five weeks to write &#8220;anything he wanted&#8221;.\u00a0 According to noted Tezuka scholar, Natsu Onoda Power, in her book <a title=\"God of Comics\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=1522\"><em>God of Comics: Osamu Tezuka and the Creation of Post-World War II Manga<\/em><\/a>, &#8220;the editor, who felt sorry for Tezuka for his declining popularity, offered the commission as Tezuka&#8217;s &#8216;last work&#8217; before retirement&#8221; (2009, p. 106).\u00a0 Originally conceived as a special commemorative project celebrating Tezuka&#8217;s (then) 30-year career as a manga artist, it was developed under the banner of &#8220;Osamu Tezuka&#8217;s One-Man Theater Production&#8221;, with the idea being to publish five independent stories that would spotlight Tezuka&#8217;s <a title=\"Osamu Tezuka\u2019s Star System\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=912\">Star System<\/a> and feature many of his characters.<\/p>\n<p>However, what Tezuka came up with, was <em>Black Jack<\/em> (1973-83).<\/p>\n<p>Far from the planned farewell tour, <em>Black Jack<\/em> (1973-83) was an instant success, appealing both to his die-hard fans as well as a more general audience, and it catapulted Tezuka to one of the highest levels of popularity of his career.\u00a0 The short 5-week commission ended up being 5 years long, from 1973 to 1978, and produced 230 chapters.\u00a0 What&#8217;s more, its popularity proved to be so lasting that another 13 chapters were produced intermittently over the next five years, from 1978 to 1983.\u00a0 It also revitalized Tezuka and spurred him on to creating other popular series such as <a title=\"Three-Eyed One (Manga)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=803\"><em>The Three-Eyed One<\/em> (1974-78)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_556\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/blackjack-manga02.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-556\" class=\" wp-image-556 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/blackjack-manga02-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Pinoko and Sensei\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/blackjack-manga02-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/blackjack-manga02.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-556\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pinoko and Sensei<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>Black Jack <\/em>(1973-83), like <a title=\"Astro Boy [aka Mighty Atom] (Manga)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=138\"><em>Astro Boy<\/em> (1952-68)<\/a> and <a title=\"Rainbow Parakeet (Manga)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=778\"><em>Rainbow Parakeet<\/em> (1981-83)<\/a>, is an episodic manga series that can be read in any order because, with the exception of a single two-part story, each chapter is self-contained.\u00a0 Although the story plots can vary greatly, with\u00a0<a title=\"Black Jack (Star)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=1043\">Black Jack<\/a> himself sometimes taking a back seat in the action, they usually focus on\u00a0<a title=\"Black Jack (Star)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=1043\">Black Jack<\/a> being called in as the last hope and asked to perform some kind of medical miracle.<\/p>\n<p>As an adventure series in the &#8220;medical thriller genre&#8221; (a genre more or less established by <em>Black Jack<\/em>), the tone of the series is usually relatively serious and somewhat dark, however it does have its lighter moments (usually involving <a title=\"Black Jack (Star)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=1043\">Black Jack<\/a>&#8216;s irascible &#8220;assistant&#8221;, <a title=\"Pinoko (Star)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=1240\">Pinoko<\/a>).\u00a0\u00a0<a title=\"Black Jack (Star)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=1043\">Black Jack<\/a> himself is depicted as a shadowy figure, sometimes a savior, sometimes an extortionist, and even occasionally as a vicious avenger.\u00a0 Though he is frequently responsible for great acts of heroism, Black Jack prefers to maintain his image of being heartless and corrupt.<\/p>\n<p>True to its original concept, <em>Black Jack<\/em> (1973-83) is also a haven for Tezuka&#8217;s <a title=\"Osamu Tezuka\u2019s Star System\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=912\">Star System<\/a>, with many of his characters making multiple different appearances, often as doctors or patients.\u00a0 While many of Tezuka&#8217;s regulars, such as <a title=\"Hamegg (Star)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=1079\">Hamegg<\/a>, <a title=\"Rock Holmes [aka Makube Rokuro] (Star)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=1255\">Rock<\/a> and <a title=\"Shunsaku Ban [aka Higeoyaji] (Star)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=1277\">Shunsaku Ban<\/a> pop up, others not often seen outside their own series, such as <a title=\"Sapphire (Star)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=1265\">Sapphire<\/a>, from <a title=\"Princess Knight [Sh\u014djo Club] (Manga)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=754\"><em>Princess Knight<\/em> (1964-66)<\/a>, <a title=\"Hyakkimaru (Star)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=1094\">Hyakkimaru<\/a> from <a title=\"Dororo (Manga)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=619\"><em>Dororo<\/em> (1967-68)<\/a>, <a title=\"Toppei (Star)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=1292\">Toppei<\/a> from <a title=\"Vampires (Manga)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=838\"><em>Vampires<\/em> (1966-67)<\/a>, and even <a title=\"Leo [aka Kimba] (Star)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=1142\">Leo<\/a> from <a title=\"Jungle Emperor [aka Kimba the White Lion] (Manga)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=152\"><em>Jungle Emperor<\/em> (1950-54)<\/a> also make appearances.<\/p>\n<p>Although Tezuka drew on his personal knowledge as a physician, and interjected a great deal of medical accuracy into the story and artwork (indeed many of the drawings are anatomically correct and could conceivably be used in a medical textbook), in general he chose to eschew medical plausibility in favour of a good story.\u00a0 As such, <a title=\"Black Jack (Star)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=1043\">Black Jack<\/a>&#8216;s medical feats are truly superhuman, such as operating while totally blind, completely from memory, or transplanting an entire nervous system.\u00a0 One of these miraculous operations resulted in his comedic sidekick, <a title=\"Pinoko (Star)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=1240\">Pinoko<\/a>.\u00a0 Despite originally being a rare type of parasitic twin, basically a formless jumble of organs,\u00a0<a title=\"Black Jack (Star)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=1043\">Black Jack<\/a> is able to surgically extract her organs and then place them in a body specially constructed as a plastic exoskeleton &#8211; resulting in a pint-sized fireball daughter figure for the emotionally distant doctor.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_557\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/blackjack-manga03.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-557\" class=\" wp-image-557 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/blackjack-manga03-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Black Jack's love\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/blackjack-manga03-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/blackjack-manga03.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-557\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Black Jack&#8217;s love<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In many ways\u00a0<a title=\"Black Jack (Star)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=1043\">Black Jack<\/a> is the medical doctor Tezuka wished he could have become &#8211; operating outside the constraints of the Japanese medical establishment.\u00a0 As such, many of the themes explored in Black Jack contain Tezuka&#8217;s social commentary in regards to the deficiencies he perceived in Japanese medicine, including such things as the level or corruption, doctors cultivating hero-worship, and a general adherence to hierarchy at all costs.\u00a0 However, given the level of Tezuka&#8217;s fame as well as his recaptured popularity, <em>Black Jack<\/em> (1973-83) became increasingly vulnerable to criticism from various sources, the harshest being the medical community.\u00a0 He later confessed that, in an effort to manage complaints and criticisms, he began to avoid naming specific medical conditions &#8211; effectively making\u00a0<a title=\"Black Jack (Star)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=1043\">Black Jack<\/a> more of a simple E.R. surgeon.\u00a0 This is one of the main reasons he decided to end the regular serialization of <em>Black Jack <\/em>(1973-83) in 1978 after 230 chapters.\u00a0 However, Tezuka was never one to give up on a good thing, and the regular serialization was followed by thirteen sporadic special issues, the last of which was published in October, 1983.<\/p>\n<p>Tezuka himself was sensitive to even the slightest complaints regarding certain conditions\/diseases &#8211; The first English language edition, containing a selection of chapters, was released by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.viz.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VIZ<\/a>.
