Best Shonen Magazine<\/em>

For most of the 1970s, after the the successful runs in\u00a0Shonen<\/a>,\u00a0 Mighty Atom Club<\/a><\/em><\/em>, and the Sankei Newspaper<\/a><\/em>, all came to a close, there was no regularly serialized manga series featuring Astro Boy<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Instead, Astro<\/a> was featured in a series of “one-shots” and other special editions, for a wide variety of reasons: “Slippery Catfish in Imminent Danger” was created in response to a request from Takashi Ishikawa, a science-fiction writer and a colleague of Tezuka’s working at the\u00a0Sunday Manichi Newspaper <\/em>who wanted to feature all Tezuka’s heroes “in an entertaining way”.<\/p>\n

“Showdown in the Standard Deviation Kingdom” was the result of a request by the editors ofWeekly Asahi Newspaper\u00a0<\/em>to tackle a contemporary social problem in Japan – the over-reliance of standardized school tests.<\/p>\n

“Astro Returns” was published in\u00a0Fourth Grader\u00a0<\/em>as an attempt to address the mountain of fan-mail Tezuka received after the somewhat tragic ending of the original B&W animated television program<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“Astro II” came about after Tezuka was awarded the Bunshun<\/em> manga award and\u00a0Bungei Shunju,\u00a0<\/em>as the main sponsor, wanted to include an Astro Boy<\/em> story in their deluxe edition – even though it\u00a0typically catered to an adult readership.<\/p>\n

Finally, “The Silver Tower”, “Astro Boy’s First Love”, and “The End of Astro Boy” were all created as\u00a0different features on nostalgic manga. In all, 7 separate chapters were published\u00a0as one-shots and\/or special editions.<\/p>\n

One of Osamu Tezuka\u2019s most successful creations,\u00a0Astro Boy<\/em> has been featured\u00a0in several publications. \u00a0The Astro Boy<\/em> manga has also been serialized in the pages of Shonen<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0and published in Mighty Atom Club<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0as well as\u00a0the <\/a>Sankei Newspaper <\/a><\/em>and\u00a0Second-Grader<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n
