{"id":468,"date":"2013-12-22T07:29:40","date_gmt":"2013-12-22T07:29:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=468"},"modified":"2023-02-10T04:16:46","modified_gmt":"2023-02-10T04:16:46","slug":"manga-publications","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=468","title":{"rendered":"About Tezuka&#8217;s Manga Publications"},"content":{"rendered":"<hr \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_3194\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/publication.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3194\" class=\"wp-image-3194 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/publication-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Tezuka's Manga\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/publication-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/publication.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3194\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tezuka&#8217;s Manga<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Over the years, Osamu Tezuka&#8217;s manga have appeared in dozens of different publications. \u00a0Although he did many stand-alone books (especially early in his career), his manga most often first appeared in anthology titles (alongside stories written by other artists). \u00a0In these low-quality newsprint editions &#8211; usually several hundred pages thick &#8211; Tezuka&#8217;s manga was dolled out at a rate of a few pages each week or month. \u00a0Formats varied widely, and included both ongoing and chapter-based serials, as well as loosely-connected (usually by theme or tone) and one-off short-stories. \u00a0Occaisionally, mostly around seasonal or other special occasions, they included mid-length stories in special editions and\/or supplemental inserts.<\/p>\n<p>As such, these publications represent an important part of Tezuka&#8217;s work. \u00a0For those only familiar with Tezuka&#8217;s manga as they appear in later, higher-quality, collected editions, it is difficult to grasp the complexity and demands of working within this system. \u00a0Not only was Tezuka extremely prolific in this manga production, he was constantly switching gears. \u00a0In any given month, it was not unusual to find Tezuka manga in any number of publications &#8211; from <em>sh\u014dnen<\/em> manga appearing in <a title=\"Weekly Shonen Champion \u9031\u520a\u5c11\u5e74\u30c1\u30e3\u30f3\u30d4\u30aa\u30f3 [Shuukan Sh\u014dnen Champion]\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=479\"><em>Weekly Shonen Champion<\/em><\/a>, <em>sh\u014djo<\/em> manga appearing in <a title=\"Good Friend\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=2414\"><em>Good Friend<\/em> <\/a>and <em>seinen<\/em> manga appearing in <a title=\"Big Comic \u30d3\u30c3\u30b0\u30b3\u30df\u30c3\u30af [Biggu Komikku]\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=476\"><em>Big Comic<\/em><\/a>. With only a few pages of each story published each week, Tezuka was forced to work on several distinct stories at the same time, and constantly under the pressure of a deadline. One wonders how he could keep it all straight!<\/p>\n<p>In this section you will find information about some, but not all, of the weekly and\/or monthly manga publications that have serialized his class=\"page-list-ext-item\"><div class=\"page-list-ext-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=1687\" title=\"Adventure\/Manga King\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/adventure-king-150x150.jpg\" width=\"100\" alt=\"Adventure\/Manga King\" \/><\/a><\/div> <h3 class=\"page-list-ext-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=1687\" title=\"Adventure\/Manga King\">Adventure\/Manga King<\/a><\/h3><div class=\"page-list-ext-item-content\">Also known as \u5192\u967a\u738b (Boken-o) and \u6f2b\u753b\u738b (Manga-o), these manga sister-publication were published in Japan by Akita Shoten, and feature many of Tezuka's action suplements, such as Lemon Kid and The Devil of the Earth.<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"page-list-ext-item\"><div class=\"page-list-ext-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=476\" title=\"Big Comic\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/publications-big-comic-150x150.jpg\" width=\"100\" alt=\"Big Comic\" \/><\/a><\/div> <h3 class=\"page-list-ext-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=476\" title=\"Big Comic\">Big Comic<\/a><\/h3><div class=\"page-list-ext-item-content\">Also known as \u30d3\u30c3\u30b0\u30b3\u30df\u30c3\u30af (Biggu Komikku) it is the original home to some of Tezuka's darkest, most biting social commentaries, such as Swallowing the Earth, Ayako, and Barbara.<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"page-list-ext-item\"><div class=\"page-list-ext-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=2468\" title=\"Funny\/Shonen Book\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/omoshiro-book-150x150.jpg\" width=\"100\" alt=\"Funny\/Shonen Book\" \/><\/a><\/div> <h3 class=\"page-list-ext-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=2468\" title=\"Funny\/Shonen Book\">Funny\/Shonen Book<\/a><\/h3><div class=\"page-list-ext-item-content\">Also known as \u3082\u3057\u308d\u30d6\u30c3\u30af (Omoshiro Bukku), for the most part it mainly featured Tezuka's early short stories, such those that make up Lion Books. <\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"page-list-ext-item\"><div class=\"page-list-ext-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=2414\" title=\"Good Friend (aka Nakayoshi)\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/nakayoshi-150x150.jpg\" width=\"100\" alt=\"Good Friend (aka Nakayoshi)\" \/><\/a><\/div> <h3 class=\"page-list-ext-title\"><a src=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/publications-playcomic-150x150.jpg\" width=\"100\" alt=\"Play Comic\" \/><\/a><\/div> <h3 class=\"page-list-ext-title\"><a (Purei Komikku), it is the original home to many of Tezuka's experimental short stories and only one of Tezuka's serials, Book of Human Insects.<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"page-list-ext-item\"><div class=\"page-list-ext-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=3137\" title=\"Shonen\/Shojo Club\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/temp-150x150.jpg\" width=\"100\" alt=\"Shonen\/Shojo Club\" \/><\/a><\/div> <h3 class=\"page-list-ext-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=3137\" title=\"Shonen\/Shojo Club\">Shonen\/Shojo Club<\/a><\/h3><div class=\"page-list-ext-item-content\">Also known as \u5c11\u5e74\u30af\u30e9\u30d6 (Shonen Kurabu) and \u5c11\u5973\u30af\u30e9\u30d6 (Shojo Kurabu), these two publications are home series such as Adventure of Rock (1952-54), the original version of Princess Knight, as well as an early version of Phoenix.<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"page-list-ext-item\"><div class=\"page-list-ext-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=479\" title=\"Weekly Shonen Champion\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/publications-shonen-champion-150x150.jpg\" width=\"100\" alt=\"Weekly Shonen Champion\" \/><\/a><\/div> <h3 class=\"page-list-ext-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=479\" title=\"Weekly Shonen Champion\">Weekly Shonen Champion<\/a><\/h3><div class=\"page-list-ext-item-content\">Also known as \u9031\u520a\u5c11\u5e74\u30c1\u30e3\u30f3\u30d4\u30aa\u30f3 (Shuukan Shonen Champion) it has been home to many of Tezuka's important adventure
