<\/a>Black Jack<\/em> 028, “The Finger”<\/p><\/div>\n Black Jack<\/em> (1973-83)<\/a>, Chapter 028 \u2018Finger\u2019 (\u6307), was originally published on June\u00a024, 1974 in Weekly Shonen Champion<\/a><\/em>. \u00a0Please note: this chapter is sealed<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n In this chapter, Black Jack<\/a> meets his old childhood friend, Makube Rokuro<\/a>.\u00a0 Makube<\/a>, born with an extra sixth finger (which he explains is where the \u201cRoku\u201d in his name comes from \u2013 a Japanese pun on the word for \u201csix\u201d, even though a different kanji is used) meets the young Kuroo (later known as Black Jack<\/a>) who is still in a wheelchair after an accident, and the two ostracized boys, taking comfort in each other\u2019s presence, study hard in school. \u00a0As a result, Kuroo enters medical school and\u00a0Makube<\/a>\u00a0gets the opportunity to study in America.<\/p>\n Eventually\u00a0Makube<\/a> asks Kuroo to remove his sixth finger, and the surgery is successful. \u00a0However, seven years later, Makube<\/a>, now a mob boss on the run, asks\u00a0Black Jack<\/a> to switch his fingers with those of one of his henchmen so that the police won\u2019t recognize his fingerprints. \u00a0After\u00a0Black Jack<\/a> successfully performs the transplant operation and starts to leave, Makube<\/a>, in an effort to wipe out all the witnesses, tries to kill him with a bomb. \u00a0He also kills off the man with whom he had switched fingers. \u00a0The police capture Makube<\/a>, but they cannot prove that he really is\u00a0Makube<\/a> because of the different fingerprints. \u00a0Just then, a parcel sent by Black Jack arrives \u2013 in it is the sixth finger that he had amputated from\u00a0Makube<\/a> seven years ago. The finger matches Makube<\/a>\u2018s prints and he is sentenced to death.<\/p>\n Although it has never been reprinted, it was not sealed due to controversy. \u00a0Instead it was sealed because this story was later reworked as Chapter 227, ‘Print Proof’ \u2013 this time with a drastically different take on the friendship. \u00a0Critics and fans often refer to this change as a reflection of Tezuka\u2019s personal life. \u00a0It is well known that by the time Tezuka had begun Black Jack\u00a0<\/em>(1973-83)<\/a>, Mushi Productions was bankrupt and Tezuka himself was suffering from a great deal of personal distrust as a result. Perhaps it is not so surprising that Chapter 028, ‘Finger’, an early Black Jack\u00a0<\/em>(1973-83)<\/a>\u00a0chapter, was about a friendship that becomes twisted and shattered over the years. \u00a0On the other hand, Chapter 227, ‘Print Proof’ depicts a friendship that remains unchanged, no matter what happens. \u00a0This is seen as a sign that Tezuka had overcome his earlier bitterness, and came to trust humanity once more.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Black Jack (1973-83), Chapter 028 \u2018Finger\u2019 (\u6307), was originally published on June 24, 1974 in Weekly Shonen Champion.
