Notable\u00a0Roles<\/h3>\n

Although he first appearanced as Dr. Kenichi Shikishima<\/a>‘s unyeilding assistant in the amateur Lost World<\/em> [Manuscript] (1946), his official debut was in Golden Bat<\/em> (1947). \u00a0However, he would reprise his earlier role in Lost World<\/em> (1948) and then go on to several other, small anonymous roles in other works.<\/p>\n

Tezuka often used puns in his characters’ names, and Oba’s is a classic example. \u00a0“Baka o miru<\/em>\u201d means to be on the short end in a ridiculous situation. \u00a0It’s often used as part of the expression “sh\u014djiki mono ga baka o miru<\/em>” (\u6b63\u76f4\u8005\u304c\u99ac\u9e7f\u3092\u898b\u308b), which means “it’s the honest one who pulls the short straw” – a Japanese equivalent of the phrase “no good deed goes unpunished”. \u00a0So, when Oba’s name is read as “\u014dbaka mitar\u014d?<\/em>“, \u00a0it is actually saying “you really got screwed, didn’t you?”<\/p>\n
