In Japanese, deko<\/em> means forehead. So, by elongating the “o” sound and ending with “n”, Osamu Tezuka makes is make it sound like a big protruding forehead.<\/p>\n

Distinguishing Features<\/h3>\n

Unassuming with his short, small frame, he is remarkable for his large, protruding forehead, white whispy hair, and tiny spectacles.<\/p>\n

Another of Tezuka’s scientists – in many ways similar to Dr. Hanamaru<\/a>. \u00a0Dr. Dekon’s kindly appearance belies his sharp intellect and iron will. \u00a0Usually cast as a scientist or doctor, on occaision he has taken on other authority figure roles, such as a chief administrator, a teacher or someone’s father.<\/p>\n

Notable Roles<\/h3>\n

Although he first appeared as the undercover government agent, Dr. Dekon in Mr. Cactus<\/em> (1951-53)<\/a>, he also appeared in several other series, including a memorable role as Jiro’s father in\u00a0Astro Boy<\/em><\/a> (1952-68).<\/p>\n
