Manga Shonen<\/em>

Originally planned as a one\u2013shot manga entitled\u00a0Mitsurin Taitei<\/em>\u00a0[\u5bc6\u6797\u5927\u5e1d] \u2013 literally \u201cDense Forest (i.e. \u201cJungle\u201d) Emperor\u201d, publisher Kenichi Kato convinced the young Osamu Tezuka to expand on his original story idea and offer it as a regular four\u2013page feature in the monthly Manga Shonen<\/em>.<\/i>\u00a0 Debuting in November 1950, the newly renamed and more exotic\u2013sounding\u00a0Junguru Taitei<\/em>\u00a0[<\/i>\u30b8\u30e3\u30f3\u30b0\u30eb\u5927\u5e1d], or \u201cJungle Emperor\u201d, was an instant hit and was expanded to ten pages the very next month – continuing on for over 3 years until it came to an end in April 1954.<\/p>\n

It is important to note that the first half of the Jungle Emperor<\/em> (1950-54)<\/a> manga was re-drawn in the late 1970’s for inclusion in the Osamu Tezuka Complete Manga Works<\/em><\/a> edition (MT-001<\/a>\u00a0| MT-002<\/a>\u00a0| MT-003<\/a>), published by Kodansha<\/a>. \u00a0As such, Tezuka made several changes to the original flow of the story, taking elements of the plot and moving them around to fit the updated story flow. \u00a0As such, many of the original publication dates listed below may seem to be out of chronological order, and even overlap in some instances.<\/p>\n

Deep in the heart of the African continent, a white lion named Panja rules the jungle. The Chief of the Donga<\/a> tribe wants to be rid of his rival and so strikes a deal with the famed hunter, Hamegg<\/a> and his trusty assistant, Kutter<\/a> – if they can remove the threat of Panja, the Chief<\/a> will offer up his strange crown jewel as a reward. However, even before the welcoming ceremony is complete, Panja attacks the village and leaves it in utter disarray. The next day, Hamegg<\/a> leads the village men on a safari and captures a large number of animals – that is until Panja decides to step in and free his jungle subjects. Once again, Hamegg<\/a> and his men are forced to retreat back to the village in shame. Believing that they will have at least one night of peace because of a sudden rainstorm, in the morning Hamegg<\/a> and Kutter<\/a> are surprised to learn that Panja has once again entered the village and has destroyed the Chief<\/a>‘s sacred totem. With their lives now on the line, Hamegg<\/a> crafts a plan to use a recording of Panja to capture his mate and use her as bait to lure him into a trap. Despite Panja’s valiant attempt, the plan succeeds and he’s slain and his mate is taken into captivity. As promised, for ridding the jungle of the threat of Panja, the Chief<\/a> happily gives up his strange crown jewel. Hamegg<\/a> and Kutter<\/a> part ways at the dock as the lioness is loaded onto a ship bound for the zoo in London.<\/div>\n
