When <a title=\"Sapphire (Star)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=1265\">Sapphire<\/a> is in heaven waiting to be born, a mischievous cherub named <a title=\"Tink (Star)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=1288\">Tink<\/a> accidentally gives her a second heart, and the young girl is born with both the brave and adventurous blue heart of a boy, as well as the loving and caring red heart of a girl. Realizing a mistake has been made, God sends <a title=\"Tink (Star)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=1288\">Tink<\/a> to earth\u00a0with instructions to retrieve the blue boy\u2019s heart. However, <a title=\"Sapphire (Star)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=1265\">Princess Sapphire<\/a> has been born into the Kingdom of Silverland, where only a male heir can inherit the throne, so retrieving the boy\u2019s heart is no easy task. However, after one of <a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=4946\">Lord Nylon<\/a>\u2019s traps goes sideways during the carnival, the king dies in an accident and young <a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=5598\">Prince Franz Charming<\/a>, from the neighboring Kingdom of Goldland, is accused of murder and taken into custody.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Tezuka&#8217;s signature style of drawing shimmering stars in the pupils of the character&#8217;s eyes&#8230;&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This sets off a series of events that sees <a title=\"Sapphire (Star)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=1265\">Sapphire<\/a> \u201cdisguise\u201d herself as a girl to break her new-found love out of jail and be nearly crowned as King, only to have her\u00a0secret exposed and be banished from the kingdom \u2013 with <a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=5009\">Duralumin<\/a>\u2019s dimwit son Plastic installed as King in her stead. \u00a0Taking the identity of the Princess Knight,\u00a0<a title=\"Sapphire (Star)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=1265\">Sapphire<\/a> fights to save her mother, her prince (who still thinks she\u2019s a man), and her very own \u201cgirl\u2019s heart\u201d from the clutches of the evil Mephisto, who wants to make his tomboyish daughter Hecate more feminine by any means necessary. \u00a0Along the way, she gets turned into a swan, makes a deal with the devil, regains her throne, has her country invaded, becomes a wandering troubadour, and negotiates with the Queen of the Sea for her mother&#8217;s life.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1881\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/pk-shojo-manga01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1881\" class=\"wp-image-1881 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/pk-shojo-manga01-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"pk-shojo-manga01\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/pk-shojo-manga01-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/pk-shojo-manga01.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1881\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mephisto whips up a potion<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Will she and <a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=5598\">Franz<\/a> ever get married?<\/p>\n<h2>What you should know<\/h2>\n<p>Although <em>Princess Knight<\/em> [Shojo Club] (1953-56) is often called the first girls&#8217; manga (<em>sh\u014djo<\/em>) printed in Japan, this is not the case. \u00a0In fact, it is not even Tezuka&#8217;s first attempt &#8211; both <em>The Four Fencers of the Forest<\/em> (1948) and <a title=\"Miracle Forest (Manga)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=1978\"><em>The Story of a Miracle Forest<\/em> (1949)<\/a> predate <em>Princess Knight<\/em>\u00a0[Shojo Club] (1953-56) by a few years and establish many of the themes he later explores more fully.\u00a0 However, <em>Princess Knight<\/em> [Shojo Club] (1953-56) was the realization of one of Osamu Tezuka&#8217;s long-held dreams &#8211; to create a romantic adventure story for young girls. This desire stemmed from his youth in the town of Takarazuka, and many of the themes in his girls&#8217; manga (including <em>Princess Knight<\/em>) can be directly traced to the <a title=\"Tezuka and Takurazuka Theater: A Brief Introduction\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/analysis\/analytical-essays\/tezuka-and-takurazuka-theater-a-brief-introduction\/\">Takarazuka Revue<\/a> &#8211; the all-female theatre troupe known for performing romantic plays, often based on Western fairy tales.\u00a0 Even Tezuka himself admitted in the Afterword to the\u00a0<a title=\"Osamu Tezuka Complete Manga Works\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=443\/\"><em>Osamu Tezuka Complete Manga Works<\/em><\/a> edition (<a title=\"MT-001 to MT-050\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=446\/#mt-006\">MT-006<\/a>) that his manga for girls, in particular, contains great nostalgia towards Takarazuka (1977, p. 258).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1882\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/pk-shojo-manga02.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1882\" class=\"wp-image-1882 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/pk-shojo-manga02-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"pk-shojo-manga02\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/pk-shojo-manga02-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/pk-shojo-manga02.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1882\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sapphire vs. Franz<\/p><\/div>\n<p>However, the overall look and feel of <em>Princess Knight<\/em> [Shojo Club] (1953-56)\u00a0was also heavily influenced by two films first released in Japan in 1952; one being the 1937 Walt Disney animated classic, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Snow_White_and_the_Seven_Dwarfs_%281937_film%29\"><em>Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs<\/em><\/a>, and the other the 1951 British film entitled <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Tales_of_Hoffmann_%28film%29\"><em>The Tales of Hoffmann<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 In order to achieve a similar romantic and somewhat dreamlike quality to the setting, <em>Princess Knight<\/em> [Shojo Club]\u00a0(1953-56)\u00a0was printed with the first three pages in 3-colour, and the next four pages in 2-colour. The artwork was supplemented by Tezuka&#8217;s signature style of drawing shimmering stars in the pupils of the character&#8217;s eyes.\u00a0 When these (at the time) innovative techniques were combined with his tried-and-true cinematic adventure style, <em>Princess Knight<\/em> [Shojo Club] (1953-56) set the standard for girls&#8217; manga in Japan.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, it was so successful, it spawned both a direct sequel, with <a title=\"Twin Knight (Manga \u2013 Nakayoshi)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=773\"><em>The Twin Knights<\/em> (1958-59)<\/a>, carrying on the story of <a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=1265\">Sapphire<\/a>&#8216;s and <a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=5598\">Franz<\/a>&#8216;s children, as well as a remake, known as <a title=\"Princess Knight [Nakayoshi] (Manga)\" href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=1805\"><em>Princess Knight<\/em> [Nakayoshi] (1963-66)<\/a> &#8211; the version of the story most people are now familiar with.<\/p>\n<h2>Where you can get it<\/h2>\n<p><em>Princess Knight<\/em> [Shojo Club] (1953-56) was published over two volumes as part of the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=443\/\">Osamu Tezuka Complete Manga Works<\/a><\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=452\/#mt-085\">MT-085<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=452\/#mt-086\">MT-086<\/a>).
