It’s an East Slavic female given name, derived from the Old Norse name Helga. meaning “holy” or “blessed.”

Distinguishing Features

Olga stands out in a crowd, with her oversized lion’s mane hairdo, and her signature “roman-centurian” style headband.

Status: Minor Star (★)

Despite being a robot, Olga has a strong sense of loyalty and duty, which gives her a nurturing, almost mother-like quality. As such, she’s perfectly cast as a robot caretaker and/or assistant that displays an undying loyalty to her charge.

Notable Roles

Olga has the distinction of being a rare case of Osamu Tezuka’s anime making its way into his manga, rather than the other way around. She originally made her on-screen debut in the animated feature Phoenix 2772 (1980), which was released March 15, 1980. She was also featured in the subsequent manga adaptation serialized in Manga Shonen. Although taken from Osamu Tezuka’s original story, it was drawn by Mikuriya Satomi, who was in charge of the anime’s mechanical design. Given her origin, and relationship to Godot in the anime, it was only natural that she made her proper manga debut in The Rainbow Parakeet (1981-82) – first in a cameo but then cast as a robot waiting endlessly for her maker in the chapter, “Waiting for Godot” (1981).

Manga Appearances

If you spot an appearance not already listed, please let us know in the comments section below!

1980

Phoenix 2772 as “Olga”

1981

The Rainbow Parakeet (“The Tale of Shuzenji“) as “Olga” (cameo as a painting)
The Rainbow Parakeet (“Waiting for Godot“) as “the robot”

Despite being a robot, Olga has a strong sense of loyalty and duty, which gives her a nurturing, almost mother-like quality.
