{"id":857,"date":"2014-01-23T19:49:17","date_gmt":"2014-01-23T19:49:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=857"},"modified":"2023-02-10T03:22:49","modified_gmt":"2023-02-10T03:22:49","slug":"dororo-anime","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=857","title":{"rendered":"Dororo (Anime)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5 class=\"also-known\">Also known as \u3069\u308d\u308d (<em>Dororo<\/em>)<\/h5>\n<div id=\"attachment_865\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/dororo-anime04.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-865\" class=\" wp-image-865 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/dororo-anime04.jpg\" alt=\"Dororo (1969)\" width=\"300\" height=\"226\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-865\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Dororo<\/em> (1969)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Despite following on the heels of the full-colour\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/anime\/anime-m-s\/princess-knight-aka-knight-of-ribbons-anime\/\"><em>Princess Knight<\/em>\u00a0(1967-68)<\/a> animated television series, due to budget restrictions,\u00a0<em>Dororo<\/em>\u00a0(1969) was a black and white animated television series broadcast on the Fuji Television Network from April 6 to September 28, 1969, for a total of 26 episodes.<\/p>\n<h2>What it&#8217;s about<\/h2>\n<p>During the &#8220;Warring States&#8221; period in Japanese history, the warlord Daigo Kagemitsu forges a pact with 48 demons. \u00a0In his lust for power, he promises each of them a piece of his unborn son in exchange, and so his son is born a malformed, limbless, faceless creature. \u00a0Disgusted by the creature, Kagemitsu orderds the child to be cast into the river, however it is found and raised by kindly rural physician. \u00a0As the boy grows, the Dr. Honma carefully crafts a set of prosthetics to replace his missing body parts. Once fully grown, the man now known as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=912tezukas-stars-a-l\/hyakkimaru-star\">Hyakkimaru<\/a>\u00a0(\u767e\u9b3c\u4e38), literally &#8220;One Hundred Demons&#8221;, sets off on a quest to slay the 48 demons and regain his missing organs and limbs. \u00a0His adventures soon lead him to cross paths with a young orphaned thief named\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=912tezukas-stars-a-l\/dororo-star\">Dororo<\/a>, and the two become inseparable as they cross the war-torn landscape.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_867\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/dororo-anime02.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-867\" class=\" wp-image-867 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/dororo-anime02.jpg\" alt=\"Dororo finds some eyeballs\" width=\"290\" height=\"231\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-867\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dororo finds some eyeballs<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>What you should know<\/h2>\n<p>In 1968, in order to pitch the series, Tezuka created a 13-minute full-colour pilot of\u00a0<em>Dororo<\/em>.\u00a0 Although Fuji TV was interested in the project, because of the low budgets Tezuka was forced to return to black and white animation.\u00a0 Despite this setback,<em>\u00a0<em>Dororo<\/em><\/em>\u00a0(1969) is still a great improvement over Tezuka&#8217;s earlier black and white television series,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/anime\/anime-a-l\/astro-boy-anime\/\"><em>Astro Boy<\/em>\u00a0(1963-66)<\/a> as the animators needed to capture the motion of combat and the elaborate supernatural monster designs. \u00a0In fact, many consider the black and white animation adds to the overall eeriness of the series.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_868\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/dororo-anime03.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-868\" class=\" wp-image-868 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/dororo-anime03-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Creative monster designs\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/dororo-anime03-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/dororo-anime03.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-868\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Creative monster designs<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While reasonably faithful to the original\u00a0<em>Dororo<\/em>\u00a0(1967-69) manga, rendering each monster encounter in turn, and without shirking on the bloody battles and vistas of carnage and burning villages, the network was originally concerned that the series was too dark. \u00a0To counter this, they insisted on the addition of a cute dog. \u00a0They also objected to the original opening sequence, which featured\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=912tezukas-stars-a-l\/hyakkimaru-star\">Hyakkimaru<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=912tezukas-stars-a-l\/dororo-star\">Dororo<\/a>\u00a0marching through fields of corpses to a doom-filled male vocal chorus. \u00a0The original grim music was soon replaced with a new, and unforgettably catchy piece, with tongue-twister lyrics, but the contrast between this new theme song and the vistas of carnage proved too much, and the original animation was soon replaced with scenes of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=912tezukas-stars-a-l\/dororo-star\">Dororo<\/a>\u00a0skipping playfully across village roofs.<\/p>\n<p>As such, the 26-episode black and white television series debuted on the Fuji Television Network on April 6 and ran until September 28, 1969.<\/p>\n<p>However, because\u00a0the original manga series had been cancelled before Tezuka had a chance to shift the focus towards\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=912tezukas-stars-a-l\/dororo-star\">Dororo<\/a>&#8216;s &#8220;coming-of-age&#8221; story as he had originally planned,\u00a0most of the plots revolved around\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tezuka.strobez.ca\/wp\/?page_id=912tezukas-stars-a-l\/hyakkimaru-star\">Hyakkimaru<\/a>&#8216;s battles with supernatural monsters.\u00a0 As such, viewers unsurprisingly began to consider him the main character and\u00a0from episode 14 onward, the series was retitled\u00a0<em>Dororo and Hyakkimaru<\/em>\u00a0to reflect the fans&#8217;
